"The Pond" is a depiction of an older cowboy heading for the ranch and a warm bunkhouse. He takes his gear with him on the trail and somewhere along the way he picked up an extra young horse.
I painted this scene in South dakota on an artist's ride. I was impressed with the good looks of this cowboy and the care he took of his animals and all his worldly goods. Most cowboys were not much different. They love the life in the open and work of caring for the cows. They didn't care much about material things as long as they had a few dollors in their pocket for town when they had a chance, and "found" which means room and board. Most remained single but many didn't and started a place of their own when they met the right woman. I have always admired their dilligence, and hard work and the legacy they left. They tamed the land, improved it and raised enough cattle to feed a nation. They had values. They were honest and helped one another and persisted in their choosen field.
